Poker is a game that is played with a deck of playing cards. Of games which are called "vying games", poker is the most popular of them.
Vying games are card games which have the following in common:
- The players have fully or partially concealed cards;
- The players make wagers into a central pot;
- The central pot is awarded to:
- The player (or the players) with the best combination of cards;
- or, to the player who makes an uncalled bet.
Most games of poker have the following pattern:
- The person (referred to as the "dealer") distributing (called "dealing") the cards at the beginning of each game is typically rotated among the players between each individual round of a poker game (called a "hand" or a "deal"). It is the dealer's responsibility to shuffle the deck of cards (a process of randomizing the cards within a deck of playing cards) as well as dealing -- one card at a time -- the correct number of cards to each player.
- A forced bet must be made by one or more players at the beginning of each hand. This will be the initial stake that the players will be playing for.
- The cards that a player is given (which is also called a "hand") will often change between rounds of betting. This is done by having some of the previously dealt cards replaced or by being given more cards.
- Whenever a player makes a bet, all other players must match the bet made. Any player who does not wish to match the new bet must surrender his or her cards as well as give up any stake any interest in the pot.
- If nobody remaining in the game is willing to match a person's new bet, the deal ends and the person who made the new bet wins the pot.
- If more than one person is remaining in the game after the last round of betting, all player's reveal their cards. Whoever has the best hand of cards wins the pot.
Since the cards are hidden during most of game play, it is possible to win without having the best hand of cards. This is accomplished by other players unwilling to match your bet leaving you remaining the only person in the game. Poker relies on the concept of wagering on how well one thinks their cards are in relation to other players' hands and on how well one thinks one can improve the standing of their cards they hold.
